Salmon Run Information

When planning your Alaskan adventure below is a reference guide for the typical dates for the different salmon runs.

Chinook Salmon (King)
The Chinook is the largest species in the salmon family. Its average size is around 40 pounds. On the Kenai Peninsula King Salmon fishing begins in May and continues through July. The peak time for King Salmon fishing is in July.

Coho Salmon (Silver)
The Coho is a great game fish and hits the Peninsula in July-December. They live in salt and fresh water. Their average size is around 12 pounds.

Sockeye Salmon (Red)
The Sockeye is the most coveted fish on the Kenai Peninsula. This species has 2 different runs up the Kenai River. The first run hits mid-June and the second follows in July. They are a sought after commodity and are delicious when smoked or grilled.

Rainbow Trout
Fishing for Rainbows on the Kenai River is world renown. Rainbows are one species that is year-round. They average to be around 20 inches and are considered a non-harvest species.

Dolly Varden (Char)
The Dolly, much like the Rainbow, is very sought after for fly-fishing. Thanks to the spawning Salmon, Dollies feed on their eggs and fatten up. They average around 20 inches and are available year-round.
